Children/Family Advocacy/Parent Mentor Program:

Has trained paraprofessionals who were raised and reside in the communities we serve. FIT strongly believes that individuals who reflect the ethnicity and culture of the users served can best address psychological, social and emotional issues. Our clinician and mentors all are required to have personal experience working with children who present with difficult behaviors. Our advocates have the ability to work independently or as a collaborator to existing service networks (i.e., day programs, residential placement, substance abuse, etc.). These functions include:

• Recognizing each family member’s strengths and developing them

• Empowering parents through exposure to child development education

• Help develop a healthy functioning family plan, to include appointments and family outings.

• Improving problem solving skills

• Reinforcing appropriate behaviors and teaching effective managing techniques

• Assist in bridging linkage to social and community services

• Empowering parents to organize and manage their households

• Teach budgeting, along with productive time management

• Work toward improving the self-esteem of all family members.

• Identify sources for transportation (i.e., hospital, school, DCF, community resources, etc.)
